Hey everyone! Today, we’re shining the spotlight on an angler who’s been making serious waves in the bass fishing world. Allow me to introduce Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson—a Canadian powerhouse who has recently joined the ranks of the Bassmaster Elite Series. If you haven’t heard of him yet, buckle up, because his story is one you won’t want to miss!

Gussy isn’t just any newcomer; he’s a seasoned pro with a track record that speaks volumes. After spending six successful years competing on the FLW Tour, he’s notched an impressive five Top 10 finishes, made two Forrest Wood Cup appearances, and secured overall tour finishes of 5th in 2016 and 11th in 2018. Over the past few years, he’s been climbing the ranks and solidifying his reputation as one of the most formidable Canadian anglers out there.
But Gussy’s roots run even deeper. With years of experience and outstanding results at prestigious events like the Kenora Bass International (KBI) and the Fort Frances Canadian Bass Championships, as well as other notable bass fishing tournaments across Canada and the Midwest, he’s no stranger to the competitive fishing scene. What’s more, he’s been a dedicated member of Team Humminbird and Minn Kota throughout his entire career, showcasing his loyalty and commitment to the brands that support him.
What We Love About Jeff
Not only is Gussy one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet in the world of bass fishing, but he’s also breaking the mold in some pretty interesting ways.
For starters, he’s one of the few pros who runs an aluminum boat—a Lund 2075 Pro-V Bass, to be exact—and he wouldn’t have it any other way. This choice sets him apart from many of his peers who opt for fiberglass boats, and it speaks to his confidence in charting his own course.

But don’t let his friendly Canadian demeanor fool you. Behind that big smile is a fiercely competitive angler with serious skills. Gussy is a master when it comes to deep water and offshore structures, and he absolutely loves utilizing his electronics to gain an edge over the competition. His innovative approach and willingness to embrace technology make him a standout in the angling community.
Home Base: Kenora, Ontario
Gussy hails from the beautiful town of Kenora, Ontario, nestled on the shores of the expansive Lake of the Woods. This location isn’t just home for him; it’s a vast playground that has shaped his fishing expertise. With over 1 million acres of water, Lake of the Woods offers an incredible variety of fishing opportunities, and Gussy has spent countless hours mastering its depths.
Fishing Industry Idols
Every great angler has those who’ve inspired them along the way, and Gussy is no exception. Two names stand out in his journey:
Al and Ron Lindner
“I was fortunate to meet Al and Ron when I was around ten years old,” Gussy recalls. “They used to come up and fish bass tournaments on Lake of the Woods and Rainy Lake for many years. They treated me like one of the guys when I was just a kid, and I looked up to them immensely.”
Al and Ron Lindner are legends in the fishing industry, known for their innovations in tackle design, media, and turning a passion for fishing into a lifelong career.
“They have supported my career in the fishing industry for many years and have become good friends,” Gussy continues. “They are exactly in real life how they are on TV—genuine, kind, and passionate.”
Dave Mercer
Another influential figure for Gussy is Dave Mercer, the charismatic emcee of the Bassmaster Elite Series.
“Dave is someone I look up to because he’s from Canada as well,” Gussy shares. “We’ve known each other for a long time, and he’s been a good mentor over the years. He’s a top-notch guy who brings a lot of energy and positivity to the sport.”
Favorite Techniques and Lures
When it comes to fishing, Gussy is all about finesse and utilizing electronics to find success where others might overlook opportunities.
“For me, I feel like I have an advantage when I’m faced with deep, clear water because of my background fishing these conditions back home,” he explains. “If I have to beat the bank with a crankbait or a spinnerbait, I’m probably going to get out-fished by the southern guys who excel in that arena. So, I take advantage of my HELIX units and look for inconspicuous spots that others might miss.”
Gussy is a big fan of techniques like drop-shotting, Neko-rigging, and using Ned rigs. These finesse tactics involve light lines and delicate presentations, which can be incredibly effective, especially under tough conditions.
“Light line and light tackle will still put big bass in the boat,” he asserts. “On the Tour, we’re often faced with challenging conditions, and being adaptable is key. That being said, I’ll do whatever it takes to put bass in the boat. If that means switching up techniques or trying something new, I’m all for it.”
Favorite Fishing Spot: Lake of the Woods
It’s no surprise that Gussy’s favorite lake is his home waters of Lake of the Woods.

“At over 1 million acres, it’s huge and has so much to offer anglers,” he says enthusiastically. “I love bass fishing, but I also guide and enjoy fishing for walleye, lake trout, pike, musky, and panfish—all of which are plentiful in the lake. For someone who loves to fish, it’s an amazing place.”
The diverse ecosystem of Lake of the Woods has allowed Gussy to hone a wide range of skills, making him a versatile angler capable of adapting to various species and conditions.
Embracing Technology: Changing the Game
Advancements in fishing technology have revolutionized the sport, and Gussy has been quick to embrace these changes.
“Technology has greatly helped me in how I prepare for tournaments,” he notes. “I’ve learned that I have a much greater chance to do well in these national events if I can use my electronics to find fish offshore—fish that other anglers often overlook.”
He relies heavily on tools like Lakemaster Mapping to identify promising fishing locations.
“From there, I use Side Imaging and Down Imaging to find both high-percentage structural elements and the fish themselves,” he explains. “It’s like having a detailed map and a fish-finding system all in one, which is invaluable when you’re competing at a high level.”
But perhaps the most transformative piece of technology for Gussy has been the Spot-Lock feature on Minn Kota trolling motors.
“The biggest thing that’s come along in the past few years and has changed the way all professional and weekend warriors fish has to be Spot-Lock,” he says. “I guide when I’m at home, so it’s so nice to be able to hit a button and hold my spot if I have to take off a fish for a client or bait a hook. It keeps us on the spot regardless of the conditions—wind, current, you name it. It’s incredible.”
For an angler like Gussy, who often fishes offshore and relies on precise positioning, this technology is a game-changer.
“For the way I like to fish, mainly offshore, it’s a key tool that makes life so much easier,” he adds. “It allows me to focus on fishing rather than boat control, which can make a huge difference in a tournament situation.”
Advice to His Younger Self
When asked what advice he would give to his past self about tournament fishing, Gussy doesn’t hesitate.
“Get off the bank!” he exclaims. “My results have been much better in recent years, and it’s typically because I’ve found fish with my electronics that other anglers missed.”
This shift from traditional shoreline fishing to exploring offshore structures has been pivotal in his career.
“There’s a whole world of opportunities away from the shore,” he explains. “By venturing into deeper waters and utilizing technology, I’ve been able to find less-pressured fish and develop patterns that others might overlook.”
Fueling the Passion: Competition and Community
Gussy’s love for fishing goes beyond just the thrill of the catch; it’s deeply rooted in his competitive spirit and the community that surrounds the sport.
“I’m super competitive and live for competing in bass tournaments,” he shares. “Most of my best friends tournament fish—it’s a big part of my lifestyle.”
The camaraderie and shared experiences on the water are what make the sport so special for him.
“There’s nothing quite like the feeling of being out on the water during a tournament,” he reflects. “The anticipation, the strategy, the highs and lows—it’s all part of the journey. And sharing those moments with friends who understand that passion makes it even better.”
Breaking the Mold: The Aluminum Boat Advantage
One of the unique aspects of Gussy’s approach is his choice of boat. While many professional anglers opt for fiberglass boats, Gussy stands by his Lund 2075 Pro-V Bass aluminum boat.

“People often ask me why I choose an aluminum boat,” he says with a grin. “For me, it’s about versatility and durability. The Lund handles rough water exceptionally well, which is important on big lakes like Lake of the Woods. Plus, it’s lighter, which can be an advantage in certain conditions.”
His choice reflects a willingness to think differently and prioritize what works best for his style of fishing.
“It’s not about following the crowd,” he adds. “It’s about finding what suits your needs and maximizing your performance on the water.”
Looking Ahead: Goals and Aspirations
As Gussy continues to make his mark on the Bassmaster Elite Series, he’s focused on pushing himself and reaching new heights.
“I’m always striving to improve and learn,” he says. “Each tournament presents new challenges, and I enjoy figuring out how to adapt and succeed.”
He’s also passionate about inspiring the next generation of anglers.
“I want to show young anglers, especially those from Canada or other places where fishing might not be as prominent, that it’s possible to compete at the highest levels,” he emphasizes. “If you work hard, embrace innovation, and stay true to yourself, you can achieve great things.”

“Fishing has given me so much,” he reflects. “It’s not just a job or a hobby—it’s a way of life. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had and excited for what the future holds.”
